CLIENT SPOTLIGHT
Gangtan Nursery
Using our proprietary DNA-based breeding technology we helped Gangtan Nursery to convert one of their top-selling hybrid red tomatoes to a larger, pink variety, within two years. While gaining characteristics for better commercial traction, the new hybrid tomato retained its original agronomic advantage and disease resistance.
The Problem: As a small company without an established germplasm collection, Gangtan Nursery didn’t have the resources to develop a new hybrid variety to meet their needs.
Our Solution: We leveraged their existing top-selling tomato hybrid to develop product diversification through color and size. Because we started with the existing hybrid seed, we were able to maintain the aspects of the plant that already made it successful, such as its agronomic benefits and disease resistance.
The Result: The new hybrid achieved increased commercial acceptance because it offered the larger fruit that farmers were hungry for, as well as a pink color that appealed to consumers. The whole process took less than two years, and was highly cost-effective.
